9:00 AM - 9:50 AM
Building Your Brand in the Web 2.0 World! You have an online video show or audio podcast - or you're looking to start one. Deciding on the details of creating, editing and distributing that content is only a small part of the work. Getting attention for your show after it's finished is critical to having long-term success. Using Wine Library TV as an example, Gary Vaynerchuk will show you how he has marketed himself and his business with an extremely viral Web 2.0 approach. Inspired by social networking sites, Gary leveraged technology to reach an untapped audience for his brand and now attracts more than 60,000 viewers a day. Gary will show you how he has taken a completely unscripted and unrehearsed show and turned it into a forum for massive self promotion by carefully marketing and promoting it via Facebook, MySpace, Digg, Twitter, Pownce, and other networking channels. As a result of these Web 2.0 tactics, Gary has been featured by Conan O'Brien, Ellen, Time Magazine, Nightline, The Wall Street Journal, and other national media outlets. This workshop will detail the essentials of Gary's Web-oriented approach that has garnered national attention for his brand and his business.
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
You want an engaged community. You want your audience to interact with your show and help spread the word. Then you get flamed. Then your feedback is filled with trolls. What do you do? Veronica Belmont and Tom Merritt have dealt with the best and worst of the online community and share their experiences and specific tips and tricks for dealing with a passionate audience. They'll tell you how to reward the good convert the bad and avoid the purely evil. You'll come away from this workshop armed with knowledge on how to make your community a better place for you and your listeners to grow your show.
11:45 AM - 12:45 PM
This workshop will demonstrate the benefits of using a blog to present your podcast to your listeners. We'll cover how to install and set up a basic blog using the WordPress software. We'll show you how to fortify your blog against hackers and thieves. We'll discuss the best permalink structure for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) purposes and highlight some best practices when writing a post title. We'll demonstrate one of WordPress' best features: the many types and kinds of feeds it generates for you automatically, and a way to reduce your bandwidth usage. We'll show how to customize WordPress themes as well as the 4 most important aspects of any podcast's blog theme and where they should be located. We'll discuss the fortunate problem created by the \"Digg effect\" and how you can handle the increased traffic easily. We'll cover several plugins and methods of dealing with copyright violators. Finally, we'll present a few common plugins to more easily present your podcast files and track their statistics.
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
This session is perfect for attendees who have never edited an audio file before. You'll learn the basics of audio editing with Audacity, a free open-source program available for the MacOS X, Windows & Linux. By the time you leave, you'll have a basic understanding of how to edit and save audio files for your podcast. The instructor will be showing you step-by-step details on how to delete long pauses, \"ums\" and \"ahs\" and clean up your audio files so they sound professional and organized. In addition, you'll learn how to import interviews, fade in and out music, insert segments, and align audio content. It is recommended that attendees for this session bring their laptops and pre-install the Audacity program prior to arriving (Audacity can be found at: audacity.sourceforge.net). Demo example files will be posted to the New Media Expo Forums for download All material shown in the session will be made available after the conference for download include the screen cast examples.
3:15 PM - 4:15 PM
Video provides a platform for your message that can be found on any of the video sharing sites to which you publish - that's obvious. Less obvious is that by distributing your videos to multiple sites, you provide multiple opportunities for someone searching for content through search engines such as Google, Yahoo! Ask, and MSN to find your information. In fact, with Google your video results might even rank higher than text results on that same topic. Strategically tagging your videos with the most relevant, searchable keywords will do wonders for growing your audience. In this session, let an expert in video SEO show you how to choose the best keywords and tags, achieve the highest organic search results for your content, and develop the best landing pages from your distributed content to best engage your audience.

9:00 AM - 9:50 AM
The WillItBlend.com Story: Successes and Lessons Learned. George Wright has managed to do two things on the Web that advertising execs worldwide have continue to dream about: launch a successful viral video campaign AND make money from it. In November 2006 George was walking past the blender demo room and found sawdust coming out of it. He walked in thinking there was construction underway, but instead found company founder Tom Dickson testing blenders by shoving two-by-four wood planks into the blender. The "Will It Blend?" video series was born and has increased sales over 400% as viewers tuned in to see everything from an iPhone to golf balls being blended. George will talk about what made it work so well and may even have a few surprise demonstrations!
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
If you don't have a marketing budget to increase exposure for your content, it's vital that you learn how to leverage the power of influentials on the Web. First, you'll learn some of the key behaviors of the influential 10 percent (those consumers who tell the rest of the 90 percent of consumers what to read, watch, buy, etc.), and where you can find them. Second, you'll learn the best ways to reach and motivate this important group to evangelize your content. Additionally, through detailed case studies, you'll see how several startup publishers grew their audiences exponentially in only a few months by building widgets and unique tools, creating viral campaigns, tapping social communities, and empowering their most loyal users. Remember this: if you want an audience to come to your site, you must first go to them and lure them with a relevant and valuable invitation. After this workshop, you'll leave fully prepared to get started.
11:45 AM - 12:45 PM
Social networking has taken off, thanks to MySpace, but with hundreds of millions of users on the site, it's difficult for advertisers to target the right audience. Niche Web sites, blogs and social networks are becoming the ideal way to reach an engaged, targeted audience that is passionate about a specific topic. Surging Internet popularity has caused the line between online and offline worlds to blur. Because of their increased dependence, consumer's online activities are directly influencing their real lives, behaviors and purchasing habits. Content creators can attract advertisers through their ability to create dynamic social media campaigns that translate into offline brand awareness and purchases - a fantasy for any advertiser, but one increasingly achievable. This workshop will address the changing face of online marketing, best strategies for attracting advertisers, and how online communities are assisting companies in reaching consumers in new and innovative ways.
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Rob Walch has been interviewing people for his podcasts for years. This session will cover the tips and tricks he uses to put together a great interview that entertains and informs. It will cover both the technical side of recording and editing the interview and also the \"style\" side of interacting with your guest. You'll learn about doing interviews with Skype, over the phone and in person and using examples of different tools to use. He will also cover the style issues when doing an interview and how to get celebrities to agree to do the interview in the first place - including a discussion of the waivers and releases to use. Finally, the importance of editing the interview will be covered and why \"record, stop, post\" workflow is not a good idea.
3:15 PM - 4:15 PM
This workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of the legal issues that a new media producer will consider in creating and distributing podcasts or downloadable content. Emphasis will be on understanding copyright (including ownership, works for hire, licensing and protection against infringement), trademark, and publicity rights issues which are key to content creation and distribution (whether commercial or noncommercial). This workshop will also cover the law of content-based liability as it applies to new media, including what constitutes defamation, invasion of privacy, and false advertising; how to recognize and avoid particular pitfalls with regard to content-based liability; what defenses are available to avoid libel claims; and what particular issues relate to new media. We'll also discuss an overview of the changing parameters of the Communications Decency Act. Conference attendees will learn how to: recognize potential "red flags" in the content they intend to publish; develop and implement a legal compliance strategy; and prepare for potential lawsuits.

As I wrote three weeks ago, I have been working on reading less and eliminating distractions.  I’m calling it my info diet. I’m trying my best to avoid TV (especially news) at home, but I am much more concerned about my time at work. So over the last few weeks I have systematically unsubscribed to almost every email newsletter I get.  Here are the only exceptions… SearchCap daily news on search engines MarketingVox daily newsletter Marketing Sherpa weekly research The process has been very liberating.  It is a strange feeling to come in to work in the morning and only have emails from actual human beings in my inbox.  It’s also strange to walk out of the room for an hour or two and come back in and have no new emails.  It’s wonderful. The whole reason I’m doing this is to free up time to create more.  The new design for my SEO training site is now up and running.  It’s not perfect yet, but it’s getting where I need it to be. A new feature of the new design is that I am going to be providing more “resources” for my clients, students, and subscribers. Thus, I am working hard to spend less time reading and more time writing – at work, at least. Jul 11
I’ve been working on this personal blog all morning. I redesigned the home page to be a BIO about me and added a History page as well. I also made the home page my BIO, not my blog. The goal is to get people searching on my name to find the information I want them to find. Jul 7
Starting this past week, I am going on an INFORMATION diet. Right now I’m in the middle of reading a book on how to be more efficient.  I don’t really recommend the book because it’s not that great.  But one thing it recommends is to stop reading, listening to, and watching news. I’ve thought long and hard about this one.  After all, I built my entire business since 2003 by reading and studying forums, blogs, articles, magazines, books, etc.  Also, I love to read.  I owe any success I’ve had to the tremendous effort I have put toward learning as much as I can about my industry (Internet Marketing). But I think it’s time to be more careful about how much time I spend reading vs. how much time I spend actually working. So I’m going on a diet. I’ve unsubscribed to all but one email newsletter.  I’m going to avoid all television news, magazines, blogs, and forums.  If something is important enough, I will hope that my friends or colleagues will let me know about it.  If I need to learn something, instead of reading and researching, I will ask those that have done it already. The one exception will be the few podcasts I listen to while driving.  It’s much more enjoyable than the radio, and makes my driving time pass quicker. I’ll use any extra time I gain to building valuable content for my clients and customers.  I also plan on spending more time with my wife, friends, relaxation, and personal projects. This should also help me toward my goal of working 4 days per week in 2009. Next time I talk with you, if I ask “What’s new?”…  Be assured that I honestly don’t know. Jun 18
I had a nice interview yesterday and it was posted on the WERN Radio Network by Sherese Duncan.  You can listen to it here. Jun 17
Ok, it’s about as hot as you can believe here. We have one of those remote thermometers in the house.  The sensor is right outside our back door in the shade.  It topped out at 100.  Today it got up to 103.1. Yesterday I put the sensor out on the sidewalk in the sun and it got up to 126.  It is only June 8! This is crazy.  I’m not planning on leaving the house again for the rest of the day. Jun 8
I have only blogged once per month over the past two months.  I’ve got to get back in action again. This past week my mom and dad visited from Milford, Massachusetts.  For those of you that don’t know, I grew up in the cold region of New England (Go Celtics)!  I lived the same small apartment with my sister and parents until I turned 21 and moved to New York. I always enjoy when my mom and dad visit.  (I know you read this mom!) But the thing I enjoyed most this time was just talking.  Both my parents have always been a pleasure to talk with.  I’ve always been impressed with how many close friends they both have.  In these days we live in, it’s uncommon for people to stay close friends with so many people for such a long time. My parents are different.  As we reminisce about old times, they still keep up with and talk with many of the friends they had when I growing up in that third floor apartment in the 1970s.  My parent’s friends are now in all parts of the country.  But they keep in touch with so many of them.  They care about these friends and I know for sure that many of these friends still care very deeply for my parents. It’s interesting that this got passed down to my sister and I.  We both are the same way.  In fact, many of our closest friends are the children of my parent’s friends. Both family and friends mean a lot to my parents and I’ll always owe that aspect of my personality to them. Thanks mom and dad! I love you both. Corey May 31
This is too funny.  These people actually just started singing out of the blue in a mall.  You gotta see it to believe it.  I can’t imagine what it must have felt like being there just eating your food minding your own business. Too funny…   May 6
I woke up this morning to several TXT messages from family telling me that SkyBus went bankrupt.  Real nice!  Cheap people all around the country have spent their hard-earned $10 for flights and now they are just going to keep it because of a little thing called rising fuel costs?!? The gas for my car is rising too.  Too bad.  All of us are stuggling with fuel costs.  We can’t just give up.  Why shouldn’t SkyBus have to stick it out too? Actually I don’t really care because I’m not that cheap.  They can have my 20 bucks.  The date I picked to go back to Massachusetts was not ideal anyway.  I’ll get to pick a better date if I use a “normal” airline. What is far more interesting is that today is the last day any SkyBus airlines will fly and my co-worker Shannon Miller is in Ohio right now.  He flew out there on SkyBus and was supposed to fly back here to North Carolina tomorrow. I guess he’ll need to get a cab?  We’ll see.  Stay tuned. Apr 5
This morning I added a new component to my morning jog.  Just for fun, I brought Bennett with me.  He seemed to enjoy it. (Pretty interesting, eh?  I bet you’re glad you read this post.  I think I reached a whole new level of boring this time.) I’ll try to be more interesting in the future. Mar 28
Today is a difficult day for me.  I lost someone very close to my heart.  Someone who was the founder and creator of something that has been a very intimate part of almost every morning for me over the past several months has died.  Although I will still benefit from what he started many decades ago, I can’t help but feel the loss. I hope all of my readers can appreciate that when you admire someone this much, you need to keep the things he held dear close to your heart so you never forget them. Here’s the full story. Goodbye Herb Peterson.  Rest In Peace.  I’ll be thinking of you tomorrow morning. Mar 27
