10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
A debate rages in podcasting circles about whether or not podcast hosts should read from scripts. Does it give the podcast a professional gloss, or strip it of all natural spontaneity? In this workshop, we'll be assessing the pros and cons of writing down what you want to say - and then learning how to do it well. Writing for the ear is a different skill from writing for the eye. After all, when you're listening, you can't flick your eye back up to untangle a difficult sentence. Your script needs be simple but not simplistic, clear but not insubstantial. We'll be picking apart how good spoken language works, and then putting it back together again on the page. Structured around Rachel Salaman's Top Ten Tips for writing successful podcast scripts, this hands-on workshop will leave you armed with the skills you need to communicate your message in the most effective way - whatever their message may be.
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Want to cut down editing time and give your show more polish? Learn how to create video podcasts using multiple cameras. Join veteran podcaster Richard Harrington as he shows how to harness multiple angles to improve your show. From concerts and live events to demos and interviews, multiple cameras will help you tell your story. Learn how to setup and match your cameras as well as essential editing techniques. This workshop will make multi-camera productions a snap.
11:45 AM - 12:45 PM
In this session, Don McAllister of ScreenCastsOnline will share his experiences of turning a fledgling part time hobby podcast into a successful full time New Media property generating a six figure income. Don will detail his real life experiences with different monetization strategies and adopting multiple revenue streams, all of which have contributed to building his audience each and every month, and enabled extreme levels of customer satisfaction along with high customer retention rates. In addition, we'll look at the tools and systems required to both deliver premium content and manage a membership based New Media property. The session will also take a look at screencasting as a format and explain why it is such an effective training medium, as well as taking a look at some of the more technical aspects of screencasting. You'll learn how to create stunning HD screencasts and get some great encoding tips showing you to how to deliver HD video content cost effectively.
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Rob Walch has been interviewing people for his podcasts for years. This session will cover the tips and tricks he uses to put together a great interview that entertains and informs. It will cover both the technical side of recording and editing the interview and also the \"style\" side of interacting with your guest. You'll learn about doing interviews with Skype, over the phone and in person and using examples of different tools to use. He will also cover the style issues when doing an interview and how to get celebrities to agree to do the interview in the first place - including a discussion of the waivers and releases to use. Finally, the importance of editing the interview will be covered and why \"record, stop, post\" workflow is not a good idea.
3:15 PM - 4:15 PM
Producing quality interview segments is a must for today's podcaster. The right tools and techniques create a fast and efficient workflow while elevating audio quality and reducing post-production. Award-winning multimedia producer Tracy Evans shaves years off your learning curve in this fast-paced, interactive seminar. Tracy covers the most popular techniques and technology for both studio and field production. From simple dual mic setups, to NPR style \"non-interviews\", to complex triple-ender multi-track Skype, he focuses on just the right amount of detail. You will leave this seminar armed with a swiss army knife of production knowledge. Professional production is always a balancing act. Attendees will learn to choose the best techniques by examining their resources, such as time budget, interviewee experience, interviewer skill-level, logistics, post-production capabilities, show design and other factors. The seminar will include a variety of print and video reference materials.

Keynote

Hall N1
9:00 AM - 9:50 AM
Zadi Diaz and Steve Woolf are the minds behind (and in Zadi's case, the host of) Epic Fu, the groundbreaking video podcast about art, culture and all things Internet. Sunny Gault will interview these two new media mavens and discuss how they are building a loyal community of fans around their content. Find out how they are creating shows around subjects they are passionate about and at the same time, generating revenue as a business. Sunny will also ask them about their recent business developments and what they see as the opportunities for podcasters and online video creators in the year ahead.
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
We've been told that you can't make a living on blogs or podcasts and that traffic is the key to income. There's no doubt that metrics have value, but if you're new or super-niched, you needn't worry. You don't need big numbers in order to acquire generous revenues. Even better, you needn't be a "sales" person; knowledge, enthusiasm and passion about your subject are far more valuable. Jim Taszarek has managed newspapers, websites, radio and television stations to ad revenue records and is now helping people see the awesome potential of Online Media Revenue. You'll see models of ad sales originated in commercial and NPR radio that perfectly fit Interactive Media. He'll also show you how to design simple templates for letters, e-mails, phone scripts and your media kit to reach prospects that will gladly pay to be a part of your show or blog. You might not only support your creation, but there's growing evidence that you can make a good living doing what you love.
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Join us as we discuss how to write, shoot, edit, and shape your "how to" video into a tight professional story that looks and sounds as good as anything on broadcast TV. We've been producing our show Let's Knit2gether for almost two years now and it gets rave reviews from broadcasters and knitters alike. We'll show you what we've been doing this past year, what's worked, the mistakes we've made, and all the challenges along the way. We'll also explore creative storytelling techniques, translating a knitting pattern into a video sequence, creative editing, interviewing techniques, and more. If you want to take your video podcast to the next level, then this session is for you. Niche or broad audience show creators will all find something they can use in their own content during this workshop.
11:45 AM - 12:45 PM
So you have a podcast, it's on iTunes and it's even popular! Now you want to start monetizing it by getting sponsors. What do you show to your sponsors to convince them that your podcast is worthy of their tight advertising budget? Numbers, numbers, numbers! You need to show potential sponsors, investment groups and anyone that will help you monetize your podcast how popular it really is by showing them a variety of statistics about your podcast. Do you know where your viewers are coming from? What's their demographics? How many are on iTunes? How many are using Google reader? What's your reach? What is reach? What about the videos you upload to MySpace and YouTube? How do you track those? In this session, you will learn about three services which can provide you that information, plus lots more. Marcelo Lewin, "Chief Pixel Head" at PixelHeadsNetwork.com will show you how to use FeedBurner.com, PodTrac.com and TubeMogul.com to get the stats you need for your podcasts. At the end of this workshop you'll have the knowledge you need to approach potential sponsors confidently.

Last night, I too thought Obama might have a clear path to the White House, but after McCain's pick things have changed completely. Obama had a lot of trump cards in his hand as of yesterday. Today, McCain just filled out his own hand with trump cards, and the playing field is almost completely flat now. I was just gathering together 14 videos covering Palin on YouTube (there's not much, slim pickings). She is definitely a very interesting and likeable person. http://www.nomoreincumbents.org/…-to-watch/Mobile post sent by brettbum using Utterz.  Replies. Aug 29

Check out this ABC News article on some of the major campaign donors that previously donated to Hillary Clinton and are now donating the maximum amount possible to John McCain. http://abcnews.go.com/…ions/Story Per the story, in addition to these serious campaign contributors saying, "I talk to plenty of people like me who just won't accept an unqualified president." Obama has heretofor raised a lot of money, but the real race starts Friday. Those hundreds of millions of dollars raised so far, only convinced Democrats to vote for Obama. That's only 1/3 of the US population. There is another 1/3 that are swing voters, independents etc that don't vote along party lines. Obama has to raise money to reach those people if he is going to win. That means he has to raise all that money all over again and he has to do it within 2 months.Mobile post sent by brettbum using Utterz.  Replies. Aug 28
I just ran into a funny little bug on Utterz today. I just happened to joke around and send a message to @VerizonWireless only to discover that the user actually exists. (no idea if its the company or just a person) If its truly the company, then Verizon Wireless, you suck! If its a person with no Verizon affiliation, you don't suck, but I question your naming motivations. :) Anyway, I thought I would block the user with the name VerizonWireless. After I hit the block button, it shows me as a follower of VerizonWireless! The last thing in the world I want to do is be perceived as a follower of that terrible company (did I mention they ripped me off for over $500 this year and then an additional $150 when they couldn't fix my account for problems they admitted to? Yeah, I probably did. :) ) So in my quest to snarkily attack Verizon Wireless, I somehow was dumped into a box that could be perceived as an endorsement of the company that ripped me off. That's the last thing I want, so I'd like to point this out to the Utterz team and ask that they reconsider their blocking functionality. :)Mobile post sent by brettbum using Utterz.  Replies. Aug 27
Here's some more shots of the boat that got flooded. The neighbors dock with a heron hanging out.  This dock is normally not flat, usually the dock has a landing that walks down to the plat form on the right. Here's the office, since I last posted a picture, the water has gone up another few inches. I have an inside office that I use as a backup as well, but its at a basement level and collecting water as well. The water on the lake is filled with debree from run off out of the creeks and the banks that have suddenly swelled full. These Posts normally are about 6 feet above the dock.  The dock rises and falls with the water levels and the posts are buried in the dirt. Aug 27

I'm seeing several broken css styles with the rendering on Utterz today. Plus, the query to start typing what I'm doing (as opposed to typing a title) and then to actually type what I'm doing in the body section, is down right confusing. When I first saw this, I thought Utterz had added one of those mood ring like tools found on Facebook. (ex. Brett is Happy today. Brett is soaking wet from rain today or Brett is lost in a social media design today. :) or Brett is . . . yada yada yada) I'm seeing text input boxes that do not fit with in the theme for the body section of Utterz. Also, the Add Audio Pic Video buttons seem a little buggy as well. I have a feeling that there was an attempt to make things wider and address some of the feedback requests of the past, but something definitely seems to be wrong in the execution. I'm browsing in Firefox 3 on a 17" laptop with resolution set at 1080 I think. As to the text prompts to kick things off, I think using verbage that sounds Facebooky is a mistake for several reasons. 1. It limits Utterz capability. 2. There are facebook connotations here that will mess with people and make Utterz feel like a bit of a knock off, which it isn't. 3. three, three, . . . I forget what three was for, but 4. You can't see the body text box, when you start the title text box, and that is just confusing up front and on the back end when it does show up. In general, this just doesn't feel very tight. Maybe that's an execution thing, but aside from the wider boxes, the purpose of some of these changes seems mis-directed.Mobile post sent by brettbum using Utterz.  Replies. Aug 26
I worked very late last night, slept in until about 9:30 this morning and woke up to the remnants of Tropical Storm Fay dropping inches of rain on North Carolina. The rain was pooring down fast and the first thing we ended up doing was bailing out one of our boats, the pump/batteries couldn't keep up with the rain. Then we pulled a paddle boat out of the water that was almost full as well. The office was pretty much wet everywhere from the rain falling into the office sideways. I don't keep my major equipment in the office (gets stowed away at night), so there was no damage or anything, but I'm going to be working somewhere high and dry. The rain came at a great time as the lake was just starting to get dangerously low. Here when water levels run low, the conventional wisdom is that 9-12 months down the road we could run out of drinking water. The reality is when it gets very low, we have a longer supply of drinking water, but we do not have a water supply that can keep the dozens of power plants cooled down and running. No water, means no cooling systems and that means power shut down, black out across the South East and possible power grid strains on the east coast. It would really suck if a drought in North Carolina triggered a blackout or riot in DC or NYC or any of those acronym cities ending in a 'C'. Fortunately, we have picked up a good amount of water and with luck, we'll get lots lots more over the next few days.Mobile post sent by brettbum using Utterz.  Replies. Aug 26

Now, I know this picture doesn't exactly show a great deal. If there is one thing, I'd like to learn how to do is take a great picture at night. In this picture, we were walking along the beach around 8:30 pm (when I probably should have been working on a website upgrade and figuring out how to plug authorize.net into an e-commerce platform). Way off in the distance about a mile or two, we could see some high rises in the distance. When I'm on the beach, I prefer not to see high rises anywhere, but if they have to be present I definitely like them in the distance.Mobile post sent by brettbum using Utterz. Replies. Aug 22

I am preparing to leave Los Angeles this morning. Myself, Joe Klein and Bill Fortune are driving to Laughlin, Nevada this afternoon. We'll spend a couple days there, possibly playing a little black jack on the Colorado River and then we're off to Las Vegas, Nevada for the New Media Expo (http://www.newmediaexpo.com/ ). I am very excited to get to that show. The size of the show is now expected to be much larger than past years. I have a lot of friends that go to the show every year, and it can only be more fun and interesting in Vegas. All that said, I'm no slacker and kicking off a couple great new campaigns this week as well. I'll have more details on this soon. :)Mobile post sent by brettbum using Utterz.  Replies. Aug 11

Guy at Utterz( http://www.utterz.com/…NTEyMjAxNQ ) asked us today, "My Dad taught me how to do some basic things, like how to check the oil in the car, how to change a plug, how to shave. What skills are you going to pass onto your kids?" Here's my thoughts on the topic. I had a little difficulty zeroing in on things as I wrote this while I was waking up 3,000 miles away from my kids, but I think towards the end of my article, I was finally able to zero in on things.... I'm still working on this one with my kids, but I'm shooting for a few of the following: -sharing my love of books -teach them how to ally on a skate board -teaching them how to type and use voice recognition to compose -teaching them how to cope with, deal with and enjoy people in all their peculiarities -instilling in them the value of circular logic, rhetoric and paradox -teaching them to enjoy all types of music -showing them how to have fun -teaching them how to survive through whatever life might throw at them -teaching them to be funny to keep me entertained when I get older Now, in the short term, we're trying to get our youngest daughter potty trained and speaking clearly. We're trying to teach our middle daughter how to wipe her rear end successfully without breaking the toilet. My son, who is my oldest child, is currently the most difficult as he's growing past the easier lessons and so its a fluid thing, but next up I think will be teaching him how to be aware of his surroundings and the things in those surroundings teaching him how to ride a motorcycle(My middle daughter will probably pick up those last two lessons at the same time as my son.). As to the shaving, my kids are likely going to be hairy little big foots, like myself. I may skip some of the shaving lessons and just take the whole family to the local laser hair removal center together. Maybe if we go get zapped together, it can become a hairy family bonding moment for all of us.Mobile post sent by brettbum using Utterz.  Replies. Aug 10
