9:00 AM - 9:50 AM
Building Your Brand in the Web 2.0 World! You have an online video show or audio podcast - or you're looking to start one. Deciding on the details of creating, editing and distributing that content is only a small part of the work. Getting attention for your show after it's finished is critical to having long-term success. Using Wine Library TV as an example, Gary Vaynerchuk will show you how he has marketed himself and his business with an extremely viral Web 2.0 approach. Inspired by social networking sites, Gary leveraged technology to reach an untapped audience for his brand and now attracts more than 60,000 viewers a day. Gary will show you how he has taken a completely unscripted and unrehearsed show and turned it into a forum for massive self promotion by carefully marketing and promoting it via Facebook, MySpace, Digg, Twitter, Pownce, and other networking channels. As a result of these Web 2.0 tactics, Gary has been featured by Conan O'Brien, Ellen, Time Magazine, Nightline, The Wall Street Journal, and other national media outlets. This workshop will detail the essentials of Gary's Web-oriented approach that has garnered national attention for his brand and his business.
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
You want an engaged community. You want your audience to interact with your show and help spread the word. Then you get flamed. Then your feedback is filled with trolls. What do you do? Veronica Belmont and Tom Merritt have dealt with the best and worst of the online community and share their experiences and specific tips and tricks for dealing with a passionate audience. They'll tell you how to reward the good convert the bad and avoid the purely evil. You'll come away from this workshop armed with knowledge on how to make your community a better place for you and your listeners to grow your show.
11:45 AM - 12:45 PM
The session will detail how to create a popular video show with no money and yet still deliver high production value. Starting with identifying a concept traditional media refuses to cover properly, attendees will learn how to create a studio in their mom's basement for $25. They will find out how an audience can be built virally without using fancy social networks. Attendees will learn how to gain press without a publicist or press release. They will also leave the session knowing how to side-step traditional advertising platforms like Google and successfully host their own text ads and negotiate equipment/studio needs in exchange for ad space. Having audience demographics helps advertising, but how do you get your viewers to fill out a marketing survey? Simple Promise them a must-see bonus episode for completing the survey. Finally I'll cover the pitfalls of \"selling out\" when your show gains enough attention to attract outside interests.
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
This session is perfect for attendees who have never edited an audio file before. You'll learn the basics of audio editing with Audacity, a free open-source program available for the MacOS X, Windows & Linux. By the time you leave, you'll have a basic understanding of how to edit and save audio files for your podcast. The instructor will be showing you step-by-step details on how to delete long pauses, \"ums\" and \"ahs\" and clean up your audio files so they sound professional and organized. In addition, you'll learn how to import interviews, fade in and out music, insert segments, and align audio content. It is recommended that attendees for this session bring their laptops and pre-install the Audacity program prior to arriving (Audacity can be found at: audacity.sourceforge.net). Demo example files will be posted to the New Media Expo Forums for download All material shown in the session will be made available after the conference for download include the screen cast examples.
3:15 PM - 4:15 PM
Roxanne Darling and Shane Robinson, producers of the popular and award-winning Beach Walks with Rox, will take you step by step through the necessary ingredients for producing your own internet tv show. Having produced a new episode at least 5 days a week since February 2006, they will show you how to use templates and plugins to create the most efficient workflow possible, how to keep your content fresh, and how to develop a show concept that will support your personality and your budget. You'll learn about the unique web hosting requirements for video, and learn whether or not to cross-post to other video sites. If you want to produce internet video for personal or business use, this session, full of real-world examples from over 700 episodes of Beach Walks to their consulting with companies like Prudential Insurance, will "show" what you want to know to get started or take your show from an occasional hobby to a professional pursuit.

9:00 AM - 9:50 AM
The WillItBlend.com Story: Successes and Lessons Learned. George Wright has managed to do two things on the Web that advertising execs worldwide have continue to dream about: launch a successful viral video campaign AND make money from it. In November 2006 George was walking past the blender demo room and found sawdust coming out of it. He walked in thinking there was construction underway, but instead found company founder Tom Dickson testing blenders by shoving two-by-four wood planks into the blender. The "Will It Blend?" video series was born and has increased sales over 400% as viewers tuned in to see everything from an iPhone to golf balls being blended. George will talk about what made it work so well and may even have a few surprise demonstrations!
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
If you don't have a marketing budget to increase exposure for your content, it's vital that you learn how to leverage the power of influentials on the Web. First, you'll learn some of the key behaviors of the influential 10 percent (those consumers who tell the rest of the 90 percent of consumers what to read, watch, buy, etc.), and where you can find them. Second, you'll learn the best ways to reach and motivate this important group to evangelize your content. Additionally, through detailed case studies, you'll see how several startup publishers grew their audiences exponentially in only a few months by building widgets and unique tools, creating viral campaigns, tapping social communities, and empowering their most loyal users. Remember this: if you want an audience to come to your site, you must first go to them and lure them with a relevant and valuable invitation. After this workshop, you'll leave fully prepared to get started.
11:45 AM - 12:45 PM
You have a camcorder, or, maybe even a cell phone with a video camera. You post your videos up online and perhaps even participate in "life streaming" and video communities like Ustream, Seesmic, or Justin.tv. But you don't have as many viewers as geek star Chris Pirillo and you're wondering how to take your videoblogging/life streaming up a notch. This session is for you! Robert will cover writing a better blog, why photography is important, working various communities to get exposure and promotion and how to get noticed by doing all of this well. This is an opportunity to learn how to build a videoblog that will get noticed in an ever-crowded field and have fun creating it.
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Rob Walch has been interviewing people for his podcasts for years. This session will cover the tips and tricks he uses to put together a great interview that entertains and informs. It will cover both the technical side of recording and editing the interview and also the \"style\" side of interacting with your guest. You'll learn about doing interviews with Skype, over the phone and in person and using examples of different tools to use. He will also cover the style issues when doing an interview and how to get celebrities to agree to do the interview in the first place - including a discussion of the waivers and releases to use. Finally, the importance of editing the interview will be covered and why \"record, stop, post\" workflow is not a good idea.
3:15 PM - 4:15 PM
Producing quality interview segments is a must for today's podcaster. The right tools and techniques create a fast and efficient workflow while elevating audio quality and reducing post-production. Award-winning multimedia producer Tracy Evans shaves years off your learning curve in this fast-paced, interactive seminar. Tracy covers the most popular techniques and technology for both studio and field production. From simple dual mic setups, to NPR style \"non-interviews\", to complex triple-ender multi-track Skype, he focuses on just the right amount of detail. You will leave this seminar armed with a swiss army knife of production knowledge. Professional production is always a balancing act. Attendees will learn to choose the best techniques by examining their resources, such as time budget, interviewee experience, interviewer skill-level, logistics, post-production capabilities, show design and other factors. The seminar will include a variety of print and video reference materials.

Zadi Diaz and Steve Woolf are the minds behind (and in Zadi's case, the host of) Epic Fu, the groundbreaking video podcast about art, culture and all things Internet. Sunny Gault will interview these two new media mavens and discuss how they are building a loyal community of fans around their content. Find out how they are creating shows around subjects they are passionate about and at the same time, generating revenue as a business. Sunny will also ask them about their recent business developments and what they see as the opportunities for podcasters and online video creators in the year ahead.
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
The MacBreak Video Podcast's production value is as good as anything on \"regular\" TV today. Alex Lindsay, well known for his experience in creating outstanding video, will show you how he creates exciting intros, organizes shoots to save time and money, and leaves the audience wanting more and waiting impatiently for the next episode! This session will also cover tips for various camera shoot situations, whether you are filming in an office or out on a busy street, so that you can work efficiently and capture the content correctly. Finally, Alex will talk about multiple-camera shoots and how they can add to the professionalism of your show. If you're ready to take your video to the next level, Alex will guide you in creating the best content you are capable of, regardless of your current experience level.
11:45 AM - 12:45 PM
Garageband '08 has added many new features that greatly enhance its value to podcasters. This includes new compressors and presets, the ability to change effects across a track, automation of level control, more bumpers and stingers and much more. You will learn how to improve your podcast by using these new features and to use additional plugins that work not only in Garageband but in any software (in both MacOS X and Windows) that supports AU or VST plugins. These plugins are either free or fairly inexpensive and are of practical use to any podcaster. For example, Inspector gives you lots of information on sound levels, clipping, headroom, and a spectrum of frequencies going beyond the simple meters within Garageband. Ed and Andy will give you practical tips and ideas to improve your podcast technically and in technique without breaking your wallet.

CNN is re-posting details from an Apple Insider post about the upcoming changes to the MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and various other members of the Apple family. If the rumors are correct, one of my biggest compaints about the MacBook Pro has been addressed, i.e. the lack of a user-upgradable hard disk (I ran out of [...] Aug 28
In case you haven’t heard the buzz about Ubiquity yet, you might check it out and see what you think. It’s a new project from the Mozilla labs, and while it’s still in a prototype state it looks really intriguing. The project’s goal is to allow you to interact with the browser (and by extension [...] Aug 28
I just signed up for Leo Laporte’s TWiT Army Page. It’s an interesting use of microblogging (e.g. Twitter, for the uninitiated) for a community rather than the public at large. Only problem: I’m now signed up for way too many of these things to keep up with. I’d love to hear what John Dvorak has [...] Aug 25

Just ran across this great post by Gary Vaynerchuk (of Wine Library TV) talking about how you can build your new media show / business / podcast etc. without quitting your day job. As he calls it, “hustle 2.0″. Very good message to people who think their day jobs are crowding out their passions. Aug 21

The first day of the show was great. It kicked off with a very energetic keynote by Gary Vaynerchuk, followed by a bunch of great sessions. I arrived safely in Las Vegas just moments ago, having followed the storied route of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson on the drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Fortunately no bats just outside of Barstow. Rockstar Games is set to release the next Midnight Club this October. The game is set in Los Angeles and looks like it will be a blast. According to reviews it’s an open map, so players will be able to drive through LA at will, although they have changed some of the geography of the [...] Aug 8
I was listening to net@night (one of Leo Laporte’s TWiT shows) and it sounds like Leo’s going to the New Media Expo. He mentioned that he was going to be broadcasting from the Stickam booth. Should be interesting to see what they’re up to. Aug 3
Lifehacker is reporting that Google Calendar now supports CalDAV, allowing you to sync iCal with GCal. This was already possible, but only via paid 3rd party tools from what I could determine. I really like Google Calendars, since it’s available online and lets you create multiple shared calendars. However, while it may be a bit old-school [...] Jul 28
ExtremeTech has a re-posted article about a new electric supercar, the Lightning, which looks to be a direct competitor to the Tesla. Sounds like it will be a lot of fun for those who are well heeled enough to afford $240K for their next car. It’s good for the environment though, and if you’re lucky [...] Jul 25

We’re headed to Vegas next month for the New Media Expo. I just bought tickets to the Coverville 500 show on Friday night which should be a lot of fun. I’ve been checking out Yelp for some good spots off the strip for food, drink and entertainment. Leave a comment or drop me a note [...] Jul 19
I purchased a Canon G9 a couple of weeks ago and have been very happy with it. It is essentially a prosumer grade point-and-shoot digital camera. It’s about the size of a 35mm P&S, making is much larger than something like the Canon SD1000 (which is about the size of a deck of cards). However, [...] Jul 7

ABC news has an article on their site explaining that, “[there is a] distinct possibility that the North Pole could be free of sea ice — for the first time in recorded history…” Lest anyone think that these are the ravings of crazed environmentalists, the Naval Postgraduate school in Monterrey, CA is predicting that the [...] Jun 29
I’ve just registered for the New Media Expo in Las Vegas. It’s being held at the convention center from August 14 - 16. Should be tons of fun; some very well known podcasters and new-media luminaries are presenting. Only downside: as it’s the middle of August in Vegas it will probably be about 145 degrees [...] Jun 27

So I’ve been getting a bunch of emails from Sonicwall telling me that my “subscription services” are about to expire. I just bought the thing a month ago, and it has a number of add-ons (e.g. content filtering, spam filtering) that you can subscribe to annually. I don’t need any of that and basically ignored [...] Jun 27

I just replaced the Linux firewall I was using with a small Sonicwall TZ150. It’s their low-end SOHO model but has a nice management interface and offers some of the features of the more expensive models. A very nice surprise: latency (i.e. ping time) in Team Fortress 2 is substantially less than it was before. [...] May 28
Lifehacker has an interesting article on using CHDK (”Canon Hacker’s Development Kit”) to mod your Canon P&S camera to open up all sorts of interesting features. So after a few weeks with the new MBP here are some thoughts: Pros: It’s nice to have a machine that will run OS X, various flavors of Windows, and has a Unix core. I’m the proud owner of a new MacBook Pro. I went for the more portable 15″ version and so far it has been great. I’ve been neglecting the blog for far too long - lots to catch up on. In mid-March I left my job at Prosum to go semi-independent. I just ran across this very interesting post on Marc Andreessen’s blog. He quotes a number of concepts from Charlie Munger (Warren Buffet’s partner and one of the founders of Munger Tolles & Olson). A new set of numbers was just released by eMarketer re: the current size of the podcast market. They include projections out through 2012 and expect ~25 million “active listeners” by then. This takes the cake… Swiss car maker Rinspeed has created a submersible car based on the Lotus Elise. Seems like they’ve been watching a bit too much James Bond (see The Spy Who Loved Me); are they going to do the disappearing car next? Anti-aircraft missiles perhaps? Feb 16
This should make things interesting (the quote is from WSJ’s email update this morning): “Yahoo Inc.’s board plans to reject Microsoft Corp.’s unsolicited $44.6 billion offer to acquire the Web giant, a person familiar with the situation says. This seems like a great idea. I was just discussing a similar concept with a friend and we were wondering why you don’t see more of these virtual office spaces. It looks like USC is partnering with Google to bring Gmail and the Google Apps suite of online tools to SC students as an official university solution. Great idea, IMHO, and I’d love to see them pursue this line of thinking in the future. Just wish we had it when I was there!! Jan 21
